I love it when you bluff, get called, and find out you weren't bluffing.

So, I've been playing every day, but haven't been playing alot of hands. I play 500 hands and win a buy-in or two and think I'm done for the session. When you six-table, that's about 90 minutes of playing. And then maybe get in another 3-500 hands some other time during the day. Not goot. I want to play more and get in some longer sessions. I was regularly playing 1500-2200 hands a day about 6 weeks ago.

So, I had an idea. Why don't I drop a table and use that sixth table to play MTT's. Just nitting them and having them going in the background. Doing well would be nice, but mainly playing them because they take 2-3-4 hours, and it would force me to be playing, and I can keep the other 5 cash games open for longer sessions.

Great idea? Thoughts? (I don't really want more than 6 tables going)

Anyhoo, I'm talking about 10+1's and 20+2's here. Last nite, the only one that was starting up when I had this great idea was a 50+5, so of course I sit down with 400 others and play. Tread water for over 2 hours. I'm in the middle of the pack with 46 left. Top 36 pay. $5k for first. Nice $$$ for a final table appearance. I'm being very patient; and am doing OK at cash games as well, making a few reads here and there a little better IMO.

And then this hand. I have T11,000 and AA. Shortie has T4000 and QQ. Another guy has us both covered and has AKo. We get all-in preflop, the three of us. 75% to win the whole hand. 91% to win the sidepot vs AK. I win this pot I move up to 4th place overall, right with the leaders. Flop comes QJT and I am out. What do you guys think of the temporary novelty of adding an MTT to increase the # of cash game hands I play?

I think I hate MTT's and everything they stand for. I've never won a penny in a single MTT because my luck always gives out at some point (like your AA v AKs v QQ hand, or my KK v QQ hand in the WSOP seat tourney that I'm still vaguely bitter about). Since they're such luckbox-fests, and since my luckbox is perma-broken, I simply don't play the damned things.

However -- if you think this can trick you into playing more hands, and if you WANT to play more hands, then more power to ya. Plus, any diversions are welcomed if you start feeling like you're stuck in the grind.

aj -- just curious, how many hands/hr do you get 6 tabling on party?

It sounds like a great idea if you need the motivation.

AJ, I've tried that, but MTT's put me on serious tilt so they really hurt my cash game EV & play time. You seem to always get knocked out in some horrible way, they're very frustrating.

At least 400, maybe a bit more. I change tables alot at the beginning until I get 6 I like. So, I don't always have 6 running. 4-5 running, while I'm searching for the last couple tables, which can take awhile sometimes. I also don't sit at slow tables. I just checked PT and it says 95 hands/hr per table?!? That seems a bit high to me. But, I suppose it would be right if I was consistently sitting at 6 tables for one hour straight.

Whatever gets you motivated is fine as long as it isn't adversely affecting your play. I had the same problem for awhile, playing for a little and then getting sidetracked and never really putting enough hands in, so I set myself up on more of a schedule over the summer, almost like a workday so I would put the hours in
