[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Saying that we should eat meat because of the food chain is like saying we shouldn't fly because we weren't born with wings. [/ QUOTE ] No, saying that we should eat meat because of the food chain is like saying we should fly because we have airplanes. [/ QUOTE ] WTF [/ QUOTE ] No, it's like saying "...cats should walk because they have four legs." [/ QUOTE ] And no one owns them, so they can walk wherever they please. [/ QUOTE ] I should've given you a thirty minute ban for a very weak use of a "FYP." |

[ QUOTE ]
Seems to impose more health risks than rasing your kids catholic or not allowing them to date til they're 15. Most moral impositions are annoyances at worst [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Also, I know people who are religious, or in interfaith marriages, who are not raising their children under a single, guiding religious moral system. They are giving their kids a choice in the matter. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry guys, but these things go WAY WAY beyond obvious morals like religion and sexual activity. People are, for the most part, drastically unaware of how little morality is hardwired into our genes. Beyond very basic moral feelings that are the result of evolution (ie. the morality of incest) pretty much everything we pick up morally is the result of watching those around us, and the people we pick up the most from are the two who are most imporant in our rearing. Whether or not you are aware of it, or even like it, your parents (assuming of course you were raised by them) are responsible for a very large part of your value system, whether or not they intentionally imparted it on you. |

[ QUOTE ]
Can I get Cliff's notes on why this thread became so enormous? [/ QUOTE ] Elaine happened. Also, if the kid is raised veggie-style, there is definitely a non-zero chance that he'll pull a Todd Marijuanavich and as soon as he goes off to college will get stoned nonstop and gorge himself on Big Macs. |

Not sure how this counters anything I said.

[ QUOTE ]
How is it unreasonable for me to wonder if a parent (like paluka) would raise his son to be vegetarian when there's a possibility (based on my lack of knowledge) that it could harm him? [/ QUOTE ] FWIW, I never said that. Its unreasonable for you to expect him to raise his child in a way that attempts to impart none of his belief system on his child where you will not do the same. |

[ QUOTE ]
why is it not enough to simply not eat meat yourself? Why must you also try to impose your morals on others? [/ QUOTE ] I'm not imposing anything. Please show me the part where I told you to become a vegetarian. If you feel imposed upon, that's your own conscience speaking. |

[/ QUOTE ] Wtf, I didn't expect that at all. I just thought it was interesting to hear vegetarians' opinions on raising their kids to be vegetarians. No one "owns" a possibly vegetarian kid. |

Not sure how this counters anything I said. [/ QUOTE ] Basically that you will be doing the same thing when you become a father, whether or not you are aware of it. |

[ QUOTE ]
I don't hate vegetarians, but I think they are often self-righteous and pompous about their choices, e.g., all of Elaine's references to "eating flesh," and the like. [/ QUOTE ] For the record, anyone who is upset about me calling meat "flesh" or "dead animal" needs to come to terms with their own meat-eating choices, because obviously, if you were OK with eating meat, my calling it "flesh" wouldn't wig you out. |

I'm not imposing anything. [/ QUOTE ] You did nothing short of call meat-eaters monstersous murders. If this isnt an (unsuccessful) attempt to make non-vegetarians feel bad, I dont know what is. And that, at least in my book, is attempting to impose morals on others. |
