Why don't they give them the penalty kick at the spot of the foul in the box? That seems a little more fair than giving a PK for a foul near the edge of the box then moving the ball to point blank range...

Cos thats the rule and the defenders know that, its not like its some shock to them, the french guy was an idiot the guy wasnt facing the goal, he should have stayed on his feet and not stood on the his leg right in fornt of the ref.

And that's fair? It's the rule, so that's the way it is, so that makes it fair? Nice logic. And it's not just the one in this game. It's just something I've noticed as I've watched this World Cup. It's hard to stay interested in a sport when a foul that has little to no chance of creating a goal gives the other team a close to automatic goal.

please, tell me more about whats wrong with soccer. i havent heard enough babble about every single rule in the rulebook and how it should be changed because of how it affected team x. as the guy said, the defender knew what would happen and is a [censored] tard for doing it. end of story.

this has been sais 3563465563 times around here: penalty kicks exist to keep clear in defenders minds that making a foul in that area of the field is a terrible idea. This increases scoring and generaly makes games more exciting (since players get more space in a dangerous zone).

btw, on the french goal, what a great job by viera to control the ball, then feed it to ribery instead of henry who was offsides, nice sequence

Schwartzy, the rule is like that because it is usually very difficult just to get into the penalty area and then even harder to score a goal. So that's why they award a pk. It's hard enough to bring the ball into the penalty area so if you get fouled in there it's a pk, not a bad rule if you ask me. maybe slightly comparable to the semi-circle in basketball where the defender cannot draw a charge.

Atleast it's more fair than spotting the ball at the one yard line after an endzone pass interference.

Not sure if you saw the same replay I saw. This was the torres run after the ribery goal where he sort've got sandwiched between two defenders in the box and then fell and the ref signalled play on. IMO it didn't look like there was enough contact to merit a foul. it was a fair challenge i think the ref got it right, the english commentator agreed as well.
