Was playing in one of the local Dallas "underground" clubs yesterday for the first time and was suprised at a variation of straddling they had. I'm used to playing with a live straddles where UTG can straddle for 2xBB and then gets to close the action when it gets around to him. I've also seen where you can straddle from any position around the table, for any amount, but its usually a dead straddle. So in effect it is a blind raise.
Here the straddle played was 2xBB from any position, and also closed the action. BUT....... when I say closed the action, I mean the straddle didn't have to make any action UNTIL everyone else had closed action! (game was $1/$2 NL) For example, if I straddle on the button... MP calls LP raises CO re-raises (IT SKIPS ME ON THE BUTTON) SB folds BB calls MP calls LP calls... NOW... I get to call OR re-raise. Dosn't matter how many raises or reraises happen. Pretty interesting. After the flop the play is normal. So, anyone else ever seen this, and can anyone think of a reason why you wouldn't straddle almost EVERY time? Say, every hand not in a blind, UTG or UTG+1? regards, Tim |

This rule is crazy, and I would do it every hand.
What happens if action eventually gets to you and you reraise, and someone else reraises? Do you still get to act last again? Something tells me they didn't think this through or aren't doing it right. |

Never seen that before. It's definitely to your advantage to use it though.

Straddle bets A straddle bet is an optional (voluntary) blind bet made by a player before receiving his cards. Straddles are only used in games played with blind structures. Straddles are normally not permitted in tournament formats. [edit] Live straddle The player immediately to the left of the big blind may place a live straddle blind bet. The straddle must be a raise over the big blind. A straddle is a live bet; the player placing the straddle effectively becomes the "bigger blind". Action begins with the player to the left of the straddle. If action returns to the straddle without a raise, the straddle has the option to raise. The player to the left of a live straddle may re-straddle by placing a blind bet raising the original straddle. [4][3] [edit] Mississippi straddle A Mississippi straddle buys last action before the flop. House rules permitting Mississippi straddles are common in the southern United States. Usually, a Mississippi straddle can be made from any position, although some house rules only permit the button or the player to the right of the button to place a Mississippi straddle. Like a live straddle, a Mississippi straddle must be at least the minimum raise. Action begins with the player to the left of the straddle. If, for example (in a game with $10-$25 blinds), the button puts a live $50 on it, the first player to act would be the small blind, followed by the big blind, and so on. If action gets back to the straddle with no raise, the straddle has the option of raising. The player to the right of a Mississippi straddle may re-straddle by placing a blind bet raising the original straddle. [5] [edit] Sleepers A sleeper is a blind raise placed from any position at the table other than under the gun.[6] |

[/ QUOTE ] This would explain it: [ QUOTE ] Was playing in one of the local Dallas "underground" clubs [/ QUOTE ] To the OP. It's an underground club, just have to go with the rules they have in place. Do whatever you feel is best with the situation when it arrises again is the only advice I can give. |

Wow, that's insane. You should abuse it, but only to the point where other players don't catch on/feathers get ruffled.

Ideal..
Thanks for the definitions. Although what was practiced there was a bit different from the wiki version, it sounds like that's the closest variation. |
