Guys - I'm curious why the hate for ms. Duck? Would you make similiar crass comments in real life in the presence of a woman? I doubt it.

And how about speaking your mind? There are countless thoughts that pass through our heads every minute. Why express the negative thoughts that serve no other purpose than to demean a person you don't even care about? Isn't there something more positive you could say? It's very clear, based on the big discussion recently about reducing caca posts in OOT, that many us of us should practice a bit more self censorship. So even though I might see a picture of a stranger and think to myself "Gee, that's a fat dumb bitch", is there any useful purpose served in broadcasting this thought in cyberspace? I for one would gladly refrain from expressing these thoughts if it meant not alienating the few females who do post here.

And as for the argument of "even if I don't say it, I'll still believe it", listen to some Anthony Robbins motivational CDs.

This is really what it's about. Talking about "political correctness" is just so much nonsense. At no point has fslexduck or anyone who thinks she has a point said anything about not admiring beauty. "Physical attractiveness is important to men." No $hit. No one is suggesting that this could change or that it should if it was possible. It's that tearing someone apart because you can is a lame hurtful thing to do. Regardless of whether some women are pettty little bitches as well. And yes, relentlessly judging people on the most superficial grounds in a "ha ha I'm sort of kidding but really not" kind of way does hurt them and leads to them being treated worse in contexts outside of those conversations.

But this is a hopeless effort. Anonymous internet, superficiality is easier to express, the one upmanship inherent in poker...

fs and others,

One thing that I think is important to note that sometimes gets missed in such posts is that the context in which some of these posts get made is often important.

There have been countless times when guys post pics of their gf who does not look like a model, but guys are generally pretty respectful of and sincerely complimentary towards the person as a REAL-LIFE GIRL. The same thing holds for when female posters like gorie post their pics here. Yes, gorie/katy/duck/whoever would get a very different response if their pics were posted as "HOW HOT IS THIS MODEL" as opposed to "HOW CUTE IS THIS COOL REAL-LIFE CHICK."

Of course there's plenty of misogyny from time to time on this forum. However, I think the level to which it occurs and the seriousness of the offending posts is often overstated in threads like this.

El Diablo - that was a very insightful, in-depth post.

I am going to post on this in TQZ so the other riff raff in this thread do not disturb us and allow for undisturbed, high level, intelligent discourse on this topic.

See You Over There,
-Al

The difference between short men and ugly women is that for women the pressure is coming from everywhere. Every magazine cover, every commercial, every movie, and from a young age they are brought up thinking that being attractive is their number one goal, because no one likes an ugly girl.

The other difference is that a 5'9 man is generally not going to have emotional problems because of his height because he's average, but an average looking girl is very likely to, a 6'4 guy isn't going cut himself because he's not Yao Ming, but the pretty girl who's not a beauty queen just might.

Like I said, guys don't understand the kind of pressure women are under.
