I don't think this is a bad thing if you like the guy.
It doesn't all have to be THAT cut-throat. Especially due to the chances that you will ever see him in your games again anyway.

However, I think that anybody who actually wants to improve their poker should be able to find out about these books with very little problem so the fact that he apparently didn't know about them indicates that he possibly never even tried to find them.

Less than 1 month after starting to play I did a google search for 'poker strategy articles' and I somehow ended up on 2+2 (just from the 'poker strategy' part).

I had never heard of Sklansky (or Hellmuth or Brunson or anybody else for that matter) and had no idea that the guys who did this website had also written some books on poker-strategy.

I guess different people find out about this site and the books differently. But if you've been playing for a few years and never knew about 2+2 (or at least considered them) then that likely shows a good chance that you won't really work on it that hard anyway.

i wouldnt have found out about twoplustwo at the time i had without the person who referred me here. it might have taken me a long long time to find out about this site if ever. before finding this site i had already read like 8 poker books and was trying hard to improve. there are also people who dont realize how much literature there is on poker strategy or how much money can be earned in poker if they dedicate themselves to it. should you tell a chessmaster about how profitable poker is or does it not matter anyway because if he is serious he would already be playing? in a nutshell i disagree entirely with what you said.

this is a decent point. As is the rest of your post.

I'm willing to concede that I may be way off regarding all this stuff.
It's possible I just got lucky in happening to find this place as quickly as I did.

i think your analogy doesn't work here. if i give a smoker info about how smoking kills you, does this mean he won't smoke?

FWIW, I wasnt going for any anology. Ive just been randomly asking people that question recently.

Also... you never confirmed in that other thread: marathon in November??

I have no qualms helping good people, regardless of if it's -EV. My sense of self worth is worth more than the game of poker.

Bob, nice job. People take this [censored] way too seriously. You decided to help a nice guy - this is far more EV than letting him grind away and lose at low limits. A long time ago, a friend called me and told me about online poker. He noticed I was a terrible player, and sent me the starting hand chart from Lee Jones WLLHE. He eventually quit poker, and now I've invested a significant amount of money in a company he is starting.

A year after he did this for me, I sweated my friend Mike and 2p2er mikeyKay for a while at low limits. He grinded his way up, had some bad swings, and eventually won a 750k guaranteed on Party for 150k. I'd never have played if it weren't for my friend, and Mike probably wouldn't have succeeded without me. All three of our lives are significantly better because of it.

Player pools are so huge that not helping a nice fish 'because it will hurt the games' is a childish joke. I firmly believe I have significantly helped dozens of players, and those players have probably helped dozens more. The number on the bottom of my pokertracker continues to grow faster and faster - why shouldnt I help people again?

While I'm pretty sure this post wasn't really a reponse to my "why?" I will point out that I wasn't suggesting Bob did anything wrong. I was mostly just curious why he decided to give this guy a book as opposed to the other countless idiots he plays with.

I've coached a lot of people and ended up playing against some of them. I don't hate myself.

the guy in question is just a really nice, friendly guy who i have struck up a friendship with. we don't get together outside of the card-room or anything like that. he just is a good guy. as far as the other idiots, most of them i would like to cut into little pieces.
