They might be using no-rake poker as a way to attract people to their sportsbook, where they will make the money. Thats all I can think of.

Actually, if there is no rake, one can play more hands profitably, so the games will be looser even if populated by more sharks

Most people will just play the same as they normally do though.
If they were weak-tight rocks on other sites then they will remain so at WPEX. They are not very likely to determine that there are a few more hands that suddenly become +EV because of the lack of rake.

They give that actual reason on their website.

BTW, that's how Richard Branson started out.
He set up Virgin Records as a store in the London West End. He sold his records at a loss in order to get customers.

Done rather well for himself - no?

They keep the rake for a week so there's some investment income. But of course that's peanuts compared to just keeping the rake.

This is wrong. They have the money for investment income iregardless of whether you have access to the rake rebate or not. Only need enouch cash on hand to cover transactions.
