I was in a game where I was asked what I had because a sidebet was made on my hand. I don't really care, but I want to know if imagewise is this a good sign, bad sign, or is it time to change gears? (FYI: I don't think anyone really won)

Well, they shouldn't have made a side-bet on your hand without asking you if you would reveal your hand first. But since any serious players would know this, I would guess that this was a casual game. If it were a serious game I wouldn't show my hand, and tell players that they had made a breach of etiquitte. In a casual game, I would show my hand but also tell them that I probably wouldn't in the future (using more tact then that, obviously). The only time I would ever choose to show my hand is to set up an opponent for a move later on, but that's pretty risky against strong opponents, so I don't do that very often anyway.
