I did a website for a client (a restaurant), they hired me about 2 months ago, I finished it about 1.5 weeks after they hired me, took about 35 hours @ 40$/hour. I didnt bill them becuase Im usually at the reatstaurant all the time, but due to not having any onsite problems, an hour drive etc, I never billed them.
I went to show another restaurant owner my work on the site almost 2 months later, and it was down. the site had the defuault under construction page back up. When I finished the site, I checked the next day (almost a full 24 hours later) and everything was in order. I called the restaurant right when I found out it was down, and asked if they got any emails etc from the hosting co, they didnt. So I have no idea want the hell happened (nor does the hosting co that I contacted today). I havent billed. Do I knock off some money for something that realyl wasnt my fault, but I have no way of proving it wasnt? The owner because of a death of one of their workers didnt get to see the site while it was up, it was a week after I told him it was done before he could look at it, and it was down (although he never called to say anything, he said he was super busy)?? PS for you web design guys, how much do you charge for a basic website, and how long does it usually take? |

Umm, re-upload the site. If you don't have it backed up you shouldn't be getting money because it's your fault that you still don't have the work you've done.

Charge full amount. |

Charge the full amount and don't wait so long to bill next time. Site's never supposed to go online till the money's in your pocket anyway.

what did you include for the $1500? original art or maps, or concepts? anything for the back end that required programming? a links page? or any content or optimization to bring them traffic, although that might not apply to a business that just wants to answer questions for a potential customer about location, menu, or prices.
did you have any coupons or specials...anything they can modify on their end? did they supply the text and pics of food or staff? if they just got a template type site, they probably could have gotten one for less, but wouldn't necessarily known how to get it set up professionally without leaving out important features/benefits. I am still not clear on how long it was actually offline...was it down for 2 months, or just a week? the only real cost to them was lost opportunity cost. but as a matter of course, you might want to do spot checks...aren't there very cheap programs that check downtime? maybe that should be included...at the very least a 404 page with basic details instead of the generic hosting message. much of what i am talking about is for future not past, but it would certainly be reasonable to discount something or add future value just as a gesture of good will. |
