I tend to loosen up in position when the table gets short. But I continue to play very tight in the blinds. Althought the blinds have more equity with less players, the correct way to make up for this is to play more aggressive in position. Some players will not adjust to your adjustments (they will call your raises with the same range of hands preflop), so you keep that in mind postflop. But other players will notice your play and start calling in the blinds with very marginal hands. You need to punish these players by increasing your aggression on the flop, and especially the turn. Short handed is a great time to make thin value bets, and it helps if you have shown down a few stinkers. I usually continue to play when it gets HU, since most players don't adjust correctly to the blind structure and HU game.
