Geosynchronous /stationary satellites are about 25,000 miles in space above the equator. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second. The round trip from North America only accounts for about a third of a second. If DirectTV is that far behind then they have to be holding onto bits somewhere.

DirecTV vs. Over-The-Air broadcast. The directv signal is recieved by DTV and then coded to MPEG to transmit over the satellites. The receiver on the other end decompresses the MPEG. That should be the cause of your delay.
