The brands for the most part are separate. Raw is the #1 show, Smackdown is the #2 show. You can tell because it's on Friday night when nobody watches tv. The shows fluctuate sometimes as to which one is superior entertainment. Right now it's hard to say which one sucks worse becuase it's just not a good time for WWE right now.

Saturday Night's Main Event the main event is a Smackdown v. Raw six-man tag team bout that is supposed to make us wrestling fans gape in awe and wonder but which really makes us kind of go wtf? The general consensus is that they should end the brand split and put together one killer roster again.
Edit: The pay-per-views are pretty much brand specific, except for the traditionally big shows like of course Wrestlemania and Royal Rumble and the like which are shared.
