This is one reason why I posted, since following your advice and raising to 600 probably would have gotten this guy out of there pre-flop, and I would have had a decent pot for QJs even if no one had called.
In retrospect, betting the flop was the obvious thing to do (for reasons that everyone stated), and I don't know why I didn't. The check was completely out of character for me.
So I think the final answer is that pre-flop, either a limp or raise would be fine (say, limp 70% raise 30% in similar situations), but checking the flop was idiotic.
