Re: Sex for promotions and raises.

Blarg,
In most situations it is more advantageous to someone's career to be someone who goes out with the boss and pick up chicks to nail rather than be someone who the boss nails.

Depends where you're coming from and where you're going. Many bosses don't hang with their subordinates anyway, and are even forbidden to(that's the way it is at all the law firms and accountancy firms I've worked at), so it's not even an option unless you're a woman.
And one can get things going through their sexuality in many ways besides sleeping around. Women can stroke men's ... ego's ... and flirt with them and flatter them in a way men can't(if they would even want to), and it works like a charm almost every time. I've rarely seen a boss who doesn't like flattery and "extra attention" from his secretary or female subordinates. Almost all seem to thrive on it, and many encourage it, sometimes even when it's at its most excessive. It can be very creepy looking on from the outside in and realizing that after all the women get their raises, vastly reduced workloads, and occasionally promotions for cooing at and flirting and who knows what else with the bosses, there's no way there will be anything left to pass out to the males. I've often seen both jobs and advancement offered only to women, and indeed been the only male in a place, because the bosses must have their brainless cuties around, even if they can barely spell their own names.
This kind of thing is very common with administrative staff.
Now, if you are closer to your boss's level and you are in one of those unusual organizations in which staff of different levels are free to fraternize outside of work instead of it being an unwritten or written law that you can't, being the boss's pal can become a possibility. I wouldn't put a female law associate's ability to coo and suck her way to the top notably high, as she's too valuable to lose in risky gonad follies and her contribution is given a real value in the organization. She's "above the line" and viewed as a profit generator, not a liability that's extremely easy to send to the junkpile if it starts acting up and things go wrong without feeling that you've lost anything worth having.
However, that doesn't necessarily stop all of them from trying. I've seen it, and it can be pretty over the top. Not that it always works either, but I have seen it work for people who were transparently incompetent. And I've seen women, beautiful women too, who have the dignity not to try to pull that crap, and recognize it in other women and not care for it one bit.
