People talk about how racism is involved or the crime isn't that serious, which is baloney. My take on it is that it's precisely since the NFL lets so many guys get away with so much, and looks so corrupt and ridiculous for it, that it has to jump on a scapegoat if the ball gets rolling. And that scapegoat better not be someone whose crime is doing steroids or fighting in nightclubs, because NFL players will do that regularly until the end of time. So if they go after one guy in particular for doing that, it will look absurd and hypocritical.

They can get away with making an example of a guy doing something probably few other guys are doing. But there's no way in hell they'll go after a guy doing the same thing a ton of their other players are doing every week. If they did that, they might as well empty their rosters.
