Re: Who wants to explain the FedEx Cup
[ QUOTE ]
So no doubt their agreement with FedEx gave them relentless advertising during every event - mentioning the FedEx point standings every day, making sure to call it "The Race for the FedEx Cup" or whatever it is, etc. etc. Just whoring the crap out of FedEx. In exchange FedEx gives the Tour the shitton of moneys needed to pay the players.

Isn't that how sponsorships are supposed to work?
And I'm sure the sponsors and venues of the "playoff" events ponied something back to FedEx somehow. But RedEx does seem clearly invested in this, and despite its Nascar mimicry, it's probably a good move. The Super Bowl happened with the same kind of idea- imagine if some corporation had bought the 20-year sponsorship rights to that game back in 1967.
That said, I love Tiger's move too, from a business standpoint. It tells Fedex "Look, I crap bigger than your Cup, so you might want to think about making a deal with me personally, or else I'll sink the whole thing" but he also nominally respects the championship in case it does take off.
