If you live in the northeast, you should be able to find much better Belgian whites than Hoegaarden. Here are four suggestions in order of my favorite to not quite as good, but still better than Hoegaarden:

Southampton Double White Ale (New York)
Allagash White (Maine)
Unibroue Blance de Chambly (Quebec)
Ommegang Witte (New York)

I've heard good things about Allagash and Ommegang. I live in TX, however, so no dice.

I first tried Hoegaarden in Belgium 5 years ago and loved it. It seems to have been gaining popularity here in the states since then, because it appears to be widely available now.

I don't have a clear recollection of my impression of it in Belgium, but I do being disappointed the first time I had it after returning to the states. Still a good beer though.
