Carry a small quantity of some kind of propellant in a container that would allow you to squirt it a few feet. If it's something with a legitimate purpose, all the better. "Why yes, I always carry lighter fluid with me...you never know when a barbecue is going to break out!" Once your attacker realizes he's been doused, he's probably not sticking around to see the lighter. Also, if you actually do end up torching someone...get the hell out of there, you may be in some trouble.
