Everyone I've met from "Northern Virginia" has made a point to specify they live in "Northern" Virginia. Why?

I'm assuming the Northern part is built-up and more urban, and the Southern part is more rural, so you don't want people to think you are some trashy hick, or what?

Just say Virginia, don't be ashamed.
