I agree with the sentiment so far that there is a clear difference in shooting an intruder in the home with a gun pointed at someone versus shooting the friend running away. And in the US it would've been prosecuted accordingly.
I think even if the 2nd friend running away had stolen belongings in his possession or had even harmed people before fleeing, I still don't think you can shoot him in the back - you can only shoot I believe in order to protect as the friend in the OP did.
I did hear a rumor recently that a law was overturned in a particular state (possibly Florida) and now you can shoot an intruder fleeing your residence in the back. Can anyone confirm/deny?
