Nice question.
In the old series there is a build up to the moment when it is revealed that Darth Vader is luke's father.
This would be completely ruined if you were to see 1,2 and 3 first.

Not necessarily true. There's just a different dramatic moment. Now, the viewer is "in the know" and the dramatic moment is when Luke finds out what we've known all along, that Darth Vader is his father. Because of the prequels, the movies are watched differently, the dramatic points from movie to movie change a little, but that moment isn't ruined just because the audience knows.
