I think you pointed out your mistake yourself -- you made a bad raise pre-flop that left you out of position w/o the chips to make a move. I would have either smooth called or more likely raised all-in (depending on my reads, and the player tendencies). Incidentally, if you had a big stack I would have liked your pre-flop play.

Also, I check fold or push all-in on the flop (depending on the same factors).
