Default Re: Can you distinguish between a fake smile and a genuine smile?

19/20, which is surprising since I suck at reading people in live play.

Number 3 beat me, which is pretty shocking because looking back his is one of the most obvious cases of "okay now smile... hold it... and stop". His cheeks do come up much higher than the other fake smiles which is why I thought he was genuine, but the forced shift back to the base position, the stillness of his head and the long blink immediately following the smile should have told me he was a big fat phony.

18/20. The last one I couldn't figure out and got wrong. His was a confusing smile, not like the others.

Caveat: I've read most of Navarro's book, months ago, so I probably subconsciously remembered something from it.

I thought Number 20 was one of the easiest ones. Everything about this guy screamed "I'm lying and I suck at it" to me. There is no upward movement below his eyes, he licks his bottom lip (a sign of discomfort), and in fact he is so uncomfortable with deception that he even shakes his head for us! I guess this is what threw you off, but I don't know why a person would do that if they were geniunely amused.

Great link.
