My friends and I consistently make fun of guys who wear button down short-sleeved shirts. Particularly if they are plaid.

I think that if you're looking for something short-sleeved, you need to go with a polo- or golf-shirt. If the occasion calls for something more dressy, then you've got to go with a long-sleeved button down.
This may be a regional thing; as I said, though, guys who wear short-sleeved button downs are major dweebs around here. <shrug>

I agree almost 100%. Wear a long sleeve button down with the sleeves rolled up, it looks a million times better.

to echo what daver said above, 1 solid exception is short sleeved linen shirts. I bought a few from Zara, and they feel great in hot weather, and look great b/c they don't look like a dress shirt with short sleeves. they aren't appropriate for all occasions, but I wear them around a lot. I also have a plain white one I got from Banana Republic, and a couple other random ones.
the only downside is that my Mom told me they looked like a bunch of shirts she threw away years ago [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
