The only girls I've ever told have thought it was the coolest thing ever.

It doesn't surprise me people get difference responses, it all just depends on your confidence/way you say it. Saying 'i play poker' makes it sound like a video game you play while you should be looking for work, while 'professional poker player' even while bad, sounds better.

it also matters greatly who you are talking to. a dumb college girl in Vegas is much more likely to be impressed than a surgeon you meet at a dinner party.

again, i think the biggest factor is how you say it. def. ways of doing it to impress nearly anyone.

there are going to be some circles of people with whom "profesional poker player" will always carry a stigma. Now, if you are extremely successful, and build up enough of a roll to make enough 'passive' investments in RE or stocks, or bonds so that you dont need to play poker anymore, this becomes less of a problem.
my old girlfriends family/friends were all from old old money/snooty Boston, and trust me, 'professional poker player' was not something anyone of these people would have been impressed with.
