Re: Several Hotshots Supposedly Broke Or In Debt
This is a good post and it is stated in an abstract way, just as Sklansky's technical poker advice is.
Obviously someone like Sklansky can't name names, and names are not the point anyway.
The way you get to be considered a top player is often to play in the "big game" or other very high stakes games, or even more so now, to play in a lot of major tournaments, so sometimes you make the final table and appear on TV.
There are certain players who have a reputation for beating high stakes games, and there are some who are obviously beating major tournaments. Some of the others who are well known may be good but not great players who are losing of break even at the stakes they are playing. Playing high can make you well known, but also broke.
Sklanksy is apparently a regular at 300/600 limit holdem and other games about that level. I am sure he beats them reasonably consistantly. Despite his ego, he knows to play games he can clearly beat.
I think there are a lot of players who are cautious about what they play, but beat what they play. That is how I do it, and I think it is a safe approach if you are going to gamble for a living.
