I've heard both Red Auerbach and John Thompson make this statement. At my grandfather's funeral (Bill is a family friend) I asked him if it was true, he said yes, for his NBA career, but not college.

Man, I've been a Celtic fan all my life and knew that Russell was famous for blocking shots and keeping them in play but never heard anything like that that he "never" blocked one out of bounds. That's absurd to believe that to be true.
