I hate to post strat in OOT but yeah, chuddo is right, your main goal as an SAT tutor (I was one for a while) is convincing the parents that you're not a molester and that they are spending their money wisely. Then you help the kid read the textbook. That's it. It's easy money for a smart person who is good at dealing with people. Not a smart person who is not. So fuggitaboutit.

Does this apply primarily to freelancers, or also to people going through the auspices of a Princeton Review/Kaplan?

Especially to PR/Kap people. They have a very systematic system that you use when tutoring or teaching classes in a group. When you go into someones home you spend lots of time placating the nervous parents that you're making progress, when often you are not. Frankly its a total ripoff, kids should just buy a bunch of How To Take SAT tests and read them. You are just a motivator, which is not a bad job, but it requires a lot more teaching/saleman skills than smarts.
I dunno about freelancers actually, I can't imagine how that would work.
