The funny thing is that he doesn't even realize that the following two statements are equivalent.

Jesus had a better solution. God is Love. Love God with all that is within you. And Love others as yourself.

You can argue that to "Fear God" and to "Love God" are equivalent statements. But I don't think it's immediately apparent. To Fear someone is not normally understood as having the same relationship with them as Loving them.
