One of the magazine that did a cover story on him, he specifically stated that he felt buying in with one's own money was very important to him.
He's a bit manic-obsessive so I can believe he didn't have any backers.
The article mentioned that he worked a $7 a hour job one year even when he was winning big online because he felt an obligation to stick it out.
