Man, I go through the same thing with my buddies. We play on Friday nights with a $5 buy-in. I can't get them to go any higher because I win about 70% of the time, and finish second quite often when I don't win. Yet they don't do anything to get better at the game, and are convinced Q-9 suited is a great hand that should be raised with.
I've found it most profitable for me to play a super-tight game until the blinds reach at least 400-800. And always be skeptical of the slowplay. It seems to be their favorite move - check-call on the flop, check-call on the turn, all-in on the river.
