I thought the characters escaped to an island at the end of the Dawn remake. Anyway, at the end of Lucio Fulci's Zombie the two main characters do escape the zombie island in the end, only to find out that the rest of the world has been overrun by zombies as well. It is implied that they have nowhere to go and will die.
