Default Re: Dumb people who think they are smart

sometimes they'll do something that lets you know they are really smart or really dumb.

I find it's easier to deduce intelligence from witnessing dumb things, rather than smart things. This is because we often can't understand things that are "smarter" than us, but can easily see when someone does or says something dumb.

In other words, I'll start everyone off with like a 140 IQ, and just deduct points for every dumb thing I hear them say or see them do*. It's easier this way than starting at 100 and working "up".

Of course some people don't say much or do much so it's tricky.

*This is probably a really dumb way to guage intelligence, and I should deduct 5 IQ points for utilizing this method.

Good in general. Smart people probably spend a lot more time unable to express themselves despite their intelligence than lording it all over. They can only give a hint of themselves because anything more is inappropriate. So in a way their intelligence might as well not exist. It can just lie trapped and untapped within them.

About judging people for doing dumb things, though -- some people are just absent-minded, tired, or stressed. You know the stories about how Einstein couldn't even remember his own phone number or address. I think I might prefer a simple-minded sort as, say, a taxi driver, than someone weaving all over the road as he pondered deeply. Pondering might bring out the bumbler in people.
