well he plays poker so he's a poker player. he's just not a professional poker player.
he has a huge roll (exact figure unknown but it's big) and he enjoys challenging himself against the best players in the world. his initial interest was to play for the highest stakes in the world (100k/200k I believe) and this is where the corporation came in. since no full-time pro has the roll to support those mega-high limits, they came together and pooled their rolls - each taking turns at playing Beal heads up. at least this is how i understood it to work.
i'm looking forward to reading the book and finding out all the details.
