Well, much like Melinda (imo) he benefits greatly from a very weak field.
Outside of this, I think Blake's appeal lies largely in the fact that he's "just good enough" in alot of critical categories (based on how he's packaged), and this translates to a strong overall appeal.
He's the non-threatening "indie / hipster" kid for mainstream America. He's got the forearm tattoos, but has a generally wholesome look. He takes classics and puts his "unique spin" on them, but nothing too experimental or overboard. His voice is not that great but generally a pleasant tone. He's not the best dancer / stage act, but he seems in control and is at least on-the-beat unlike Sligh. He beatboxes...
You throw this all at America and it's a likeable contestant with a defined, easily understood hook.
