I looked the dame up and down; she was a looker, and lookers meant trouble. I wasn't one to complain, though. Business was slow and trouble was my business. Before I could even say a word, she was at my desk, Polariod in hand. She cut right to the chase.
"I need you to track down this guy, and I hear you're the best private dick in town," she said, handing me the photo. "His name's Variance, he's robbed my husband blind. If you can find him, there's a cool two hundred grand in it for you."
Before I could even tell the bird she was loony, she had dashed out the door. I glanced at the picture she'd left me. Blank. It figured -- just another daffy broad making up stories about those phantoms that ruined her life. I slumped back in my chair and took a pull from my trusty fifth of Seagram's; it was going to be a long week.

OK I got nothing, but I find the idea of some 30s era private detective tracking variance comical.
