regarding the definition of "assault rifle"- Marine Corps standard issue M16A2s do not have an automatic option, only semi-auto and 3 shot burst, which is the same for all M16A2s. Only certain M4A1 Commandos, etc have that auto option as far as I'm aware. The AR-15 is chambered for 5.56 M855 ball ammo (at least that's the most common ammunition i've seen) too, just like all the "real" assault rifles"

I think you'll find that the BATFE will disagree that a weapon that is capable of 3 round burst is not an automatic weapon.

Max Effective Rate of Fire:
45 rounds per minute (semi-auto)
90 rounds per minute (3-round burst)
800 rounds per minute (Cyclic)
And for anyone that knows...3 round burst is for the most part useless other than in cases of close quarter combat. In fact, my instructors in training asked us why we'd use 3 shot burst, considering how inaccurate it is (as in it raises the sight). Basically, the implementation of a 3 shot burst auto on standard issue service rifles is pretty stupid. But I don't want to quibble over this.
