Rachel worked in the kitchen for 10 years before her first cookbook came out. I don't know about Giada but I would imagine she did as well. I can't think of any food network personality that hasn't worked as a chef.

Rachel Ray's experience amounts to working as a girl behind a soda counter, mass cooking food for a gourmet foods supermarket, and catering. She was never the head chef of a kitchen and has never worked in an actual professional restaruant setting. That is just not impressive to me.
