Maybe you crashed my wedding - I wouldn't know. We had ~275 people. Not everyone shows who says they are coming - seating is arranged but neither my wife nor I knew everyone by face. (parents from both sides invite a bunch as well...)
Given the care the waitstaff took to make sure there were no interruptions if you were to walk to the matre'd at dinner and say - where the hell are my seats?? I was supposed to be at table 12! I am pretty sure they would pull up seats to a short table and set it immediately.
But skip all that and just walk into the cocktail hour - eat all and drink all you want and move on before the seated reception.
(All this applies to a NY style wedding with 200+ guests IMHO)
