unless you have a soldering iron designed for electronics, with adjustable temp, don't attempt. most soldiering irons that come in tool kits are designed for piping, which is significantly hotter grade solder than that used in electronics. buying a proper soldering iron would cost as much as having the pro do it.

most times the replacement part is like $8-15, make sure you arent getting charged $0 for part and $40 for labor. If you are, look up the parts price, and then see if you can get the guy to just charge labor.
