after yesterday's chatter, decided to watch some neo-herzog, specifically
grizzly man. how fortuitous that everyone else did, too.
for a guy with a minidv camera and seemingly no training, he could certainly compose a shot. the cinematography that he managed out of that thing was pretty incredible. of course, he had the beautiful and lush landscape on his side, but i'm referring directly to how he framed it. some truly great moments of interplay with the animals, too.
this film is pretty raw. that scene when herzog listens to the audio of the death is intense and the helicopter pilot was brutal in his estimation of the circumstances. the viewer catches a glimpse of what treadwell was fighting when the hunters came to the grizzly maze. the one guy throwing rocks at the cub was simply disgusting, mindless narcissism (not the cool kind). as well, the way in which they taunted treadwell showed a lack of care for not only the animals, but also their fellow humans. treadwell displays this same trait with his rants against the individuals in the parks service. the monster that he opposed and despised lived within him, too.
herzog isn't trying to create a sympathetic picture of treadwell. his angle, for the most part, is fairly objective. he shows all sides of treadwell; that is, he shows treadwell: treadwell swearing, delighted by excrement, in tears, with tenderness to the animals, in vanity, everything.
the only agenda in this film is that of this is a life.
excuse the self-righteousness, but treadwell is neither gay nor straight. it's not for us to argue about his sexuality and it doesn't matter. treadwell was a person who loved animals, had difficulty functioning in the world of people and struggled to find himself. he was effeminate, but that doesn't equal gay any more than having the "balls" to live with the bears equals straight and to simplify the human experience down to this belittles him and all of us.
but, it's just the internets, so shut up rothko...
