Insurance companies have openings for actuaries all the time, and they're well paid. It's the highest pay salaried gig at the insurance co. I work for except for executives.
You could still get your folks to cosign by obtaining the proper forms and mailing them. They could sign and return them.
Credit cards should be your last resort, seriously. Don't even consider it unless you're about to be homeless and there are no other options. Credit card debt is the absolute worst financial position you could put yourself in.
