I like it MUCH better without serious reasons. Telling her it was a simple goof, joke, prank would be better. Also, should have told her right away. I wonder if there's more to the story, because the guy was holding out so long. Did he tell the story at a key moment to cut her confidence or show her how in control he was, or something? Maybe subconsiously? I doubt we'll find out either way. It doesn't sound like she's mad about him being a goof; it sounds like she's mad that it wasn't just about him being a goof, but that he used that in a certain way.

On the other hand, maybe she's just nuts. But he still didn't handle this well.

If you're gonna do a goof, then just make it a goof and be done with it before it gets weird. Otherwise, you deserve at least a good part of the blame yourself.
