I think the 10% figure is meant to include closeted gays. I don't believe 10% of people are fully disclosed gay.
Also, I would actually expect far less than 10% of male athletes to be gay. Simply because it seems like kids that grow up with some sexual confusion or homosexual preference tend to be socially awkward and lack confidence as they're trying to figure things out. And it's not the unconfident, unpopular kids that you see starring on the sports teams so much.
I'd expect this figure to rise as people become more accepting. A kid these days might realize, "whoa, I'm gay," and not feel so bad about it.
