To be fair, I prefaced my post by saying that it's probably not unknown like a lot of toher places that will be mentioned, but on the scale of NY restaurants I thin it's at least under-known. The chef having books doesn't really mean much to the average person who couldn't name the chef at any of the restaurants they like. I don't read cooking books so that does very little to make me more aware of the place. Also, it's very unlikely that someone visiting NY from out of town would know about Les Halles without specifically looking for that chef's restaurant. It's a pretty valuable thing to know, especially considering that the downtown location is one of the few really good places to eat in the financial district that's open late.
