Smug and arrogant is much more tolerable if there is some minimal level of actual talent and understanding of the game to back it up.

A compliment from somebody who doesn't know what he's doing just comes across as condescending to me. It's so obvious to everyone that Doyle is (at least) 10 times better than Gold that it made me cringe when Gold had the nerve to actually say it.
