This is the part that interests me because before this thread I had never heard of anybody saying, 'I could care less,' in a sarcastic manner, intentionally or otherwise. I thought it was understood that these people are just [censored] up a phrase because they don't know any better.

This genreal example of sarcasm is obviously true. The prime example of this is, 'Yeah, right!' It is impossible to say 'yeah, right' and NOT be understood as sarcastic, and a clarification is needed if you actually want to express the idea of 'yeah' plus 'right'.

Still, I've heard of '...could care less' being used this and I think I have to disagree, as it gives people way to much credit, consciously or otherwise.

Oh well. I don't think "Yeah right" is analogous, because when someone says that, they aren't confusing a phrase that would otherwise make sense. It's not like "Yeah wight" is the meaningful phrase that got butchered - sarcasm can be inherent in a popular phrase, but even in the case of "yeah right," the sarcasm is intended. I doubt it's intending in the could/couldn't fiasco.
