Maybe I don't understand the single enormous paragraph.

You borrowed the equipment from Friend A, and then you let Friends B, C, and D use it. Friend D broke a stick and refuses to acknowledge that he did it.

If that is correct, it doesn't matter how the stick got broken. It was under your care, and you owe it to Friend A to replace it. What happens between you and Friend D should not affect your responsibility to Friend A.

I say pay Friend A or buy him a replacement, then Friend D does not get to join in any more reindeer games. Not until he mans up and admits fault while paying you back.
