Re: a lot to talk about
I am an engineer as well. I have considered quitting several times and taking up poker full time as well. I have recently just started a business so I think this will officially be the end of me engineering career. I will now be able to exlusively play poker, although I was playing about 2-3K hands per day even with working 8 hrs a day as an engineer.
I really don't think the legality of online poker should be an issue. There is not any serious talk in legislation right now to shut it down or regulate it. When those serious talks do begin you can expect at least another 2 years before legislation is passed.
You and I are in a different situation as I graduated from college 2 years ago and I am single. You are married and are about to become a father. Big difference. My advice is coming from my perspective here.
I am pretty aware of the entire scope of engineering salaries so even if you are on the top end of the salary range you will probably make your entire years salary in 2 months playing full time.
Let's just say you are able to play for the next 3 years full time.
36 months
2 months = 1 year of engineering salary
In 3 years you will make what you would have in 18 years working as an engineer.
I say go for it an quit your job. You will enjoy raising your child and you should also now have plenty of free time to explore other ventures besides poker.
Good luck. Now I must break you.
