i would try something from the Salamander or Parodius series. they look kind of stupid, but are actually really fun when you're playing. something from the Strikers or 19xx series would be good as those are more traditional shooters that arent super difficult especially if u use bombs freely. if you can get a big ROM pack for MAME you can sort by genre and try out all the different shooters pre 2002ish.
